Stardate 17022008 , the weather forcast says it'll be frosty and cold yet we arrive at the Smithfield Arena and are suprised by a quite warm and sunny environment to begin our training session. After a projected turnout of 5-6 squad members attending the session the team kick in with only a handful of players missing which is surely a bonus. The team then completed a routine training session laid out by the management lasting between 1-2 hours only to then take it upon themselves to train further to bring the total training time to a whopping 3 hours!! All in all a pretty good day.....

But one player in particular came across as quite troubled and got more displeased and angry as the day went on.

So what was up with Mr Stanners?

Whoo, Drill Master 100%, I wonder who voted for that one?

The only routine training I took part in was the warm up jog and then the team ball/sprint exercise. After that we had our normal "training kickabout".

If I'm honest I was a little frustrated with yesterday and deep down a few of you feel the same. Comments whispered and muttered are heard by others including Management and actions also speak loud (i.e Tony going home after an 90 minutes because he was getting nothing out of it)

I suppose I boiled over a little but I'm not going to apologise for being bossy yesterday when we went through a few shooting / crossing / corner drills. It's what many of you have been asking for and when the opportunity presents itself to do something it was not taken as seriously as it should have been. I think quite a few of you now realise shooting from the edge of the area is not as easy as it looks. Now imagine it with a few oncoming defenders closing you down. (Stanner's Law says that one of you will hit a cracker from 25 yards out against London Road Tavern to shut me up)

At the end of the day we learnt the following:-

    1) Mask can not cross a ball
    2) Nige is learning to take brilliant corners with 1 2 1 tuition from TC
    3) We need to work on shooting (and basic passing for that matter - how many times did the crosser have to run 15-20 yards to collect the ball??)
    4) Ian is learning to deal with crosses / corners better
    5) Damo should take free kicks in and around the box
    6) I should chill a little
    7) MORE TRAINING IS REQUIRED

I didn't get the same impression Damo. The impression I got was that when we started doing our own training afterwards, he wanted it to be organised and productive, and wasn't happy that people weren't doing things properly as told.

He's not a lot different than me in that respect, except I tend to shout more generally, so people tend not to listen to me so much.

He certainly wouldn't have minded you boys arsing about as long as you got your line straight for the run-ups, and did what the current 'trainers' i.e. the crosser & Mark, asked. It was just that the longer we played on the more uncoherent everything became.

I reckon he just has a passion to see us do well, and in order for that to happen training must be done correctly.

\Edit - I didn't see Mark's reply before I wrote my own, but it wasn't far wrong. I'd like to see us do more of what we did - I think it was probably the most effective training we've done since I've been at the club, in terms of actuall skill improvement.

There are 10 types of people in the world: people who can read binary and those who can't.

And nor should you! I was just asking the question to instigate a thorough summary of yesterdays happenings, which is what i got.
After the game i actually got something out of training and I think a few others did too. Nige learned something about taking corners (and we need a corner taker desperately), players were practicing and thinking about their runs on corners and free kicks, and more importantly trying different and new ways of striking the ball on goal to make us more effective in that area of the pitch. I do think that some players learned nothing again though but mostly those are the 'senior' players that dont need to learn and are too good to attend training. Because some players are willing to learn think about this...

Apart from lasting the whole 90 mins, what is it that 'Player of the Year' Kev Jones can do that 'Rookie' Nigel cant do better? Maybe Nigel should start left midfield and Kev should be coming on if we need him later on in the game.

Is it time for the captaincy to be stripped from Joey who's goals and effort level seem to have dried up and no longer has an influence on the team on the pitch or off it?

With Robs goals seeming to have dried up and no effort can be seen in trying to train to rekindle the fire is it time to drop Rob back to midfield? Maskery may not be the best crosser of the ball but due to him training this season he has learned to keep the ball down and score goals plus he has the added ability to hold the ball up which none of our strikers seem to be able to do.

I think that the people who are coming to training and are trying to learn have come on in leaps and bounds this season and the positions on the pitch that we have problems are currently occupied by the players who don't attend training or dont wish to learn any more. Im not talking about training on a thursday because although its called training its just a 5 a side game of football. It needs to be remembered that all but four players (three of which didnt turn up yesterday and that dont input to the website or anything else to progress the team) are under 26 years old and want to learn and better themselves not content with just a kick about. Yes we need fitness but the majority of our fitness level should have been established pre season. As far as our skills and learning more about ourselves and how we can improve our own styles and techniques and develop new improved habits i'm thinking drills are the way forward. Oh and attendance would be good too.

Firstly well done to the players who came and were on the pitch for almost 3 hours yesterday. I don't think there is another team in our league and probably in the area who would have done that.
You may have noticed that after the "proper" training and kick about i stepped back to watch how you organised yourselves for the last hour. I learned a great deal from those observations and have entered them into my player dossiers.
I heard quite a lot of comments also and they too were noted.
It was interesting to note that some players didn't take the proper training too serious. Maybe they are fooling themselves that you don't have to be fitter to be a better player. I also noticed the lack of urgency some players showed in the kick about after. Stanners did seem troubled and aggressive yesterday and i put that down to frustration with players demanding training but not giving 100% when we have it. He also may have been disappointed that he's letting his team mates down this weekend and going to the seaside.
The big positive yesterday was that most of the players spent 3 hours doing something together and anything we did is miles better than doing nothing.

But on the flipside my mate Kenty managed to get some footage of yesterday's shooting practice from his super spy "baddie" satellite.

First off well done Stanners, think you stuck with us well even if weren’t really helping the cause.

Haven’t really got much to add, I widely agree with what Askey has said.

I don’t think we tuck it too seriously because the kick about we had put us in that mind set, I have got to say is still wasn’t enough fitness wise, we have the biggest and the strongest team in the league but it is also one of the slowest! No one can argue that we aren’t. Some ok but not many. I was up as 7am sat got to bed at about 2.15am up at 5am Sunday morning worked 6 till 11.30, then trained 12 – 3, got sleep at 1.30am this morning up at 5am for work and I cant tell that I have done any training at all, so there cant be many that can say that they are worn out, which means we need to push are selves physically a lot more! Drills, sprints, long distance runs, what ever it takes, I will be honest and say it all sounds like to mush hard work but what has to be done has to be done.

I would love to see Niall play down the left as having two fast wingers ready to burst forward will be good for the team (Matt c and Niall) and it mite even stop me playing half the game up front. I think Kev is a cracking player an a great bloke but he isn’t pulling his weight this season, Niall will offer a bigger threat going forward and a better corner by the look of it. If needs be I don’t mind taking the corners from the other side (If I have to).

Dead ball situations, I think everyone knows Askey is best taking attacking free kicks, providing it is in the suited position. I don’t see the justice in Joe, Rob and Kev taking the free kick and having first pop at goal or to create some thing when there not willing to train, don’t work hard enough in the game and don’t really offer the team any benefit at all at the moment (and all three are proven great players Kev; player of the year, Joe; 3000 goals, Rob 19 goals in about 10 games at the start of the season). Again from the other side I don’t mind trying to fill Kev’s dead ball boots, big though they may be! Ok I’m sure me, Askey or who ever takes over will mess a few up but we have gone nearly a whole season and I’ve not seen many free kicks test the keeper so whom ever takes over deserve as much time to get it right!

Just so you all know it is on my Physio's recommendation that I go the get some bracing sea air before I visit the Doctor's next week for a 3rd opinion on my 3 month old knee injury. It seems Physio has done all it can so I may have to look at other options (amputation, 3rd leg graft etc)

i think it's a masterstroke by your physio to recommend to you a weekend in llandudno. It's reknown for it's popularity with arthritic pensioners so when you see all the other people hobbling along the prom it will make your knee problem seem petty. Well done the NHS.
