The game was originally thought to be called off due to the gyppo's, but at the request of the council they dutifully moved their caravan's to the edge of the playing fields out of respect for the game of football.
With a squad of 15 turning up (not including managers Craig or Plant) Smithfield finally started to look like the professional outfit they ought to be with such quality in the team and on the bench. Against manager Craig's initial wishes assistant manager Plant decided to put Maskery in midfield and Evans up front, as a result of impressive pre-season performances.
In a match where the back four were rarely troubled, Jackson looked in better physical shape than he had done the previous week and Askey had less to whinge about.
It was Smithfield pressure from the starting whistle but it wasn't until the 30th minute that Oaktree were undone by a Rob Evans shot that squirmed under the 'keeper from close range.
As half time approached it looked like Smithfield would take a 1-0 lead in at half time, until Rich lost the ball on the halfway line allowing a rare Oaktree attack. Askey came across to help with a last-ditch tackle and the ball spilled out towards the corner at which point Stanway went racing to get to it, unaware that there was another Oaktree player racing in behind the tackled forward. In a rather dozy challenge Stanway was judged to have impeded the Oaktree forward and they were awarded a penalty, although he vehemently denies it, instead insisting that the Oaktree player made a Malouda-like dive for his knee.
With what turned out to be the last kick of the first half, the Oaktree player skied the ball over the left side of the bar which could have been as a result of Stanway's dancing along the line or Askey telling him the only way it's going in the net is if he hits it high.
Manager Tony Craig gave a rousing half time talk making the players aware of how precarious a 1-0 lead is, and in the second half Smithfield came out looking like champions.
59 minutes into a rather quiet match by his usual standards, Seymour latched onto a cross by Damien Askey with a spectacular bicycle kick that sailed into the top corner.
On 70 minutes Rich was substituted for Niall, after a better game in which he fitted in well with Smithfield's style of play.
After a very subdued (due to a work-related injury it was later discovered) match Kev Jones was unable to deliver the quality of ball that we have come to expect of him, and he was substituted on 75 minutes by James, who finished the game solidly and looks more promising with each game played.
Seymour also left the pitch on 75 minutes, replaced by Mark Stanway.
The changes seemed to do the trick as Smithfield put the game beyond Oaktree with Evans' third goal in two games on 78 minutes.
Maskery and Mark Stanway were both unlucky not to score in the final 10 minutes of the match, and Ian Stanway was forced to make two saves in as many minutes from Oaktree in the final few minutes of the game.
