At the moment we all just turn up and have a semi-serious (TP keeping score!) kick around with players playing out of their natural position. Case in point was last Thursday when you had our top scorer playing at the back and one of our centre backs playing up front. (Both did very well too
We can do a number of things such as:-
1) Splash out on a set of high viz training tops for one side instead of wearing black which does clash. Probable cost would be £25 - 30 for 10 but I have seen them in Sports Soccer cheaper
2) Have a side of attackers and defenders to help develop their skills at finding space / closing down / quick shots / marking etc
3) Develop drills for stretching and warming up that we can take and use on matchday. This will hopefully result in less aches and pains and help get players ready for kick off instead of using the first 20 minutes of the match as their warm up
4) Work on set pieces both attacking and defending. All it seems at the moment is Kev Jones to cross in and everyone rush to the ball like schoolkids. We don't all have to be like Beckham but is would be good if we worked on and have a few routines we would use
5) Allow specific players to target specific areas of their game and to improve. The best examples I can think of would be Ian to practice his goal kicks which we can all acknowlege are poor at best and for Niall to work on his fitness levels
It won't happen overnight and will require a lot of hard work both physically and mentally. It will take a big man to own up to some things in item 5 and you will have more respect if you do, than having the management and fellow players point things out to you.
If we can be a little more professional in our approach and have better organisation, it will naturally give us an edge over our opponents, inspire confidence in our own ability and give us that extra 10% we need to push towards promotion and cup success.
Discuss.
