Time for Structure??

After today's match and laboured efforts against Rising Sun I think it might be a good time to start introducing a structure at our "Training" on Thursday nights.

At the moment we all just turn up and have a semi-serious (TP keeping score!) kick around with players playing out of their natural position. Case in point was last Thursday when you had our top scorer playing at the back and one of our centre backs playing up front. (Both did very well too )

We can do a number of things such as:-

    1) Splash out on a set of high viz training tops for one side instead of wearing black which does clash. Probable cost would be £25 - 30 for 10 but I have seen them in Sports Soccer cheaper

    2) Have a side of attackers and defenders to help develop their skills at finding space / closing down / quick shots / marking etc

    3) Develop drills for stretching and warming up that we can take and use on matchday. This will hopefully result in less aches and pains and help get players ready for kick off instead of using the first 20 minutes of the match as their warm up

    4) Work on set pieces both attacking and defending. All it seems at the moment is Kev Jones to cross in and everyone rush to the ball like schoolkids. We don't all have to be like Beckham but is would be good if we worked on and have a few routines we would use

    5) Allow specific players to target specific areas of their game and to improve. The best examples I can think of would be Ian to practice his goal kicks which we can all acknowlege are poor at best and for Niall to work on his fitness levels

It won't happen overnight and will require a lot of hard work both physically and mentally. It will take a big man to own up to some things in item 5 and you will have more respect if you do, than having the management and fellow players point things out to you.

If we can be a little more professional in our approach and have better organisation, it will naturally give us an edge over our opponents, inspire confidence in our own ability and give us that extra 10% we need to push towards promotion and cup success.

i totally agree with super subs comment. Players need to make a bit more commitment to push this club on. If anyone would like to turn up an hour earlier on Thursday maybe we could do a few things. I know its dark put some players are in the dark now. Club fines should be introduced on Sundays for players turning up late and taking to the field unprepared. 10:15 is the arrival time for a reason, so we can have a proper warm up, a proper team talk and to discuss what was good and bad about the previous game. This can't take place at 10:45. I think some players think the parkie puts the nets up. Come on players show your commitment

I've been saying that for years Stanners, but it never changes. I am quite happy to turn up at 7 and do an extra hour before we go on for 5-a-side at 8. However you have to ask yourself whether the rest of the squad would be willing, taking into consideration current commitment levels.

An extra hour would be great as we could go for a run to build up our poor fitness levels and then do some work on the rest of our game during training (we could do with having a bigger pitch though). However some players just want to turn up and play and think that what we did on Sunday is acceptable.

It's time the management got tough. I understand that some players have work, family and travel problems, but others have no excuse.

I also agree with the Gaffers point. It seems to be the same players every week who turn up early and put the nets up. Also why do we insist on standing around and taking shots at Ian before the match? It doesn't make any difference to our shooting performance in a match and i'm sure it doesn't help Ian much either. Starting on Sunday I propose that we do a proper 10-15 minute warm up together.

    What do we think?

As you can probably tell i'm still ****** off after yesterday! However I feel better now after my rant.

Its quite simple. You train, you play. People live round the city so why not car share? It does not have to be an additional hour, why not meet at 7.30 to do our warm up. Half an hour extra is not really going to inconvenience anyone except those doing shift work or who work away. People just need to get off their arse, stop watching TV, have their tea earlier and put a bit more effort in.

As for the Gaffers mention of fines I'll be speaking to him after training this week with one or two brilliant suggestions.

    Another idea / suggestion

We can introduce a system of mentoring whereby experienced players help to bring on and develop the less experienced members of the squad as a kind of "Teaching Buddy". As a few examples:-

    Joey and me
    Kev and Niall
    Damo and Ben
    Rob and Matt M

Calm down Beno. Its not a dig at anyone in particular, those were the first people that spring to mind. The fact that I have not seen you on a Thursday night means that you and Damo only have 90 minutes a week to build up a further understanding and further cement your place.

If you struggle for a lift I'm in Longton so can gladly pick you up if you are this end of the City. No charge for petrol as well as its a company car
